Adult Art Classes

Carolyn Hendriex is a graduate of Southwestern University, and has been teaching private lessons to all age groups for 20 years.  She has also been teaching high school art for 15 years.   She says, “I love watching my students learn how to use their art skills; it is such a fun and fulfilling thing to watch.”  These classes are perfect for anyone with an interest in art – from beginners to the most advanced!  All materials are included, unless otherwise noted. Come and join the fun!

Learn How to Create Beautiful Landscapes

This class will get you started on creating lovely landscapes with pastel, and water soluble pencils.  You will learn how to create depth in your drawings, and how to achieve the beautiful sunrises and sunsets with pastels, and water soluble pencils.  You will learn techniques on drawing trees, structures, and grounds.

How to use Oil Pastels

You will learn the art of painting with Oil Pastels.  Three sessions will consist of using the traditional oil pastel, and the other three sessions you will learn how to use the new water soluble oil pastels.

Yoga

A Yoga class is made up of stretching exercises, breathing techniques and deep relaxation.  It’s a slow, thoughtful system of stretching and balancing.  There is a pose, which affects every muscle, organ and gland in the body and is working on all levels of your being – physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Yoga is a very natural form of self-care.

 

Sevika Linda Ward, MBA, CYA, RYT and professional certified yoga instructor, has taught internationally and throughout the United States for over 10 years.  She has been invited to teach on 3 visits to India and has taught at the Crescent Spa Hotel in Dallas, at Yogaville in Virginia, the Mercy Center in California, the Zen Mountain Center in California, the Omega Institute Yoga Weekend Retreat, the Texas Yoga Retreat, and the Telugu National Convention.   She has conducted 3 local yoga retreats at the Cedarbrake Retreat Center in Belton.  Linda now teaches locally in Austin, Georgetown, Temple and Killeen.  She can be reached by email:  sevika@hot.rr.com or by calling 254-699-6908.

Fencing Class

Anyone who is at least six years old is welcome to come learn to fence with the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association 2000 Coach of the Year, Gary Murray. Coach Murray has coached five national champions, one world champion, one Olympian and numerous Jr. Olympians. Class will include fencing instruction, games and relays. All equipment is provided.

School of Eight Directions Martial Arts

This class features an eclectic blend of karate and jiu jitsu designed to give the student comprehensive self-defense skills at all ranges, from kicking and punching, to grappling and ground fighting. 

The goals of the class are:

To provide reliable self-defense skills

To help students attain strength, fitness and coordination

To instill self-discipline and perseverance

To foster a sense of propriety and virtue

To maintain a supportive and positive environment

 

Fee: $40 Resident / $45 Nonresident per month

 

Beginner Class (ages 7 to 12):  6:30-7:30 pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays

Adult Class (ages 13 and over):  7:30-9:00 pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays

Hapkido

Fees: $40 R / $45 NR per month

 

Instructor:  John Krause     John Krause has been practicing martial arts for 8 years including both Hapkido and Tai Chi. He holds a First Dan under the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation, headed by Grand Master J.R. West. Mr. Krause's instructor and mentor is Randall Sexton, 3rd Dan.

The name HapKiDo means "The way of strength and harmony".  Through practice one learns to harmonize his or her own mind and body, eventually developing the ability to utilize an attacker's own energy against them to develop effective and powerful self-defense techniques. Hapkido emphasizes the soft and the hard, circular motion, non-resisting movements, and control of the opponent. A very comprehensive martial art, Hapkido employs striking, kicking, throws, joint locks, pressure points, ground fighting, weapons and weapons defense. Since Hapkido does not rely on physical strength, it is an art ideal for both sexes and can be practiced for a lifetime.  For ages: 16 and older.

Adult Watercolor - A Challenge

Sheila Beck began her art education in 1953, and has been learning, creating, and teaching ever since.  Her works are included in private collections in the United States, Great Britain and Australia, and have been featured in exhibitions worldwide.  She is proficient in all mediums but particularly enjoys the pure, vibrant colors achieved in watercolor.

In these one-day seminars, all supplies are provided for a great watercolor experience.  Learn drawing and the proper application of glistening watercolor in a 2 hour fun class.  Ideal for beginners to experienced painters.  Adults only, please (19 & up).

Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing will teach the great elegant dances from back in time. Learn everything from the cha-cha, waltz and foxtrot to swing, tango and samba!  Bring a partner or come alone.  Either way, you will learn a few steps, meet new people and have fun all at the same time! For ages 15 & up.

Country Western Dancing

Laughter Yoga

Laughter yoga incorporates yogic breathing and relaxation techniques with simulated and genuine laughter to create aerobic exercise.  With no contortions or intense positions, anyone can do it at any time!

Tai Chi

Instructor: Louis Knox    Louis Knox has been practicing martial arts for 16 years. He began teaching Judo and added Tai Chi several years ago. He received his accreditation with Paul Wang from the Tai Chi People Holistic Health Center in 1999.

Practitioners of Tai Chi enjoy increased flexibility, better balance, coordination, stronger mental focus and a sense of rejuvenation.

Class meets Thursdays, 4-6:30 p.m.



Silver Sneakers

The nation’s leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults!  These are low-impact classes which promote increased strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.  Equipment includes resistance band, exercise ball, light free weights & a chair.  Silver Sneakers is included with a Recreation Center membership, so these classes are open to all members.  GET FIT, HAVE FUN, MAKE FRIENDS!

Magic

Argentine Tango

Beginner Classes

*The beginner classes are non-sequential and can be taken in any order. However, they both must be taken to move on to Intermediate Tango, unless given permission by instructor.

*Open Embrace

Looking for a Fun Evening Out?  This class is an introduction to the fundamentals of Argentine Tango.  Instruction will include the technique of movement, posture, open embrace, connecting with your partner, elements of walking, rock turn to the left, rock turn to the right, and ocho cortado.  No dance experience required. For ages 15 & up: partner not required.

This class is an introduction to the fundamentals of Argentine Tango.  Instruction will include the technique of movement, posture, milonguero (closed) embrace, connecting with your partner, elements of walking, rock steps, back ochos, and cross system crusada.  No dance experience required. Intermediate Classes

This class continues from the Beginner Argentine Tango. Some of the intermediate concepts include: paradas (stops), sacadas, variations on ochos, giros, dancing in same foot system, boleos, volcadas.

Emphasis on improvisation & musicality of the dance to traditional tango, nuevo tango & alternative music will continue to be emphasized. Completion of beginner courses or consent of the instructors is required.

For ages 15 & up: partner not required.

Misha Lee's Boot Camp

Having trouble losing weight and getting motivated? The Georgetown Recreation Center has the answer with a Six Week Fitness Camp for adults that stresses such things as cardio endurance, muscular strength, and nutrition.

Clogging

The Georgetown Recreation Center will be hosting a new dance class this Fall. Intermediate Clogging is a 3 month advanced class . Just some comfortable clothes, tennis shoes, a towel, and water bottle is needed.
